The call
Tradition says that as a boy, during a parikrama of the Godavari, Thakur ji told him to bring the lost Braj back to light. He asked how he would know which place was a lila sthali. Thakur ji said He would stay with him and help wherever it was hard. Source: History Pandit
Thakur ji came with him to Braj as Ladle Thakur, who sits today in the Dauji temple at the Brajacharya Peeth in Unchagaon. Source: History Pandit

Finding the lost Braj
1552
History Pandit writes that after Krishna, two people took up the care of Braj's lila sthalis: first Krishna's descendant Vajranabh, and then, in the sixteenth century, Narayan Bhatt Ji from the south. Source: History Pandit
By his time many of Braj's forests, kunds and lila sthalis were lost. Narayan Bhatt Ji searched them out, named them, had them restored and set the worship for each. Source: History Pandit
He found more than 300 of Braj's sacred places again and in 1552 wrote Vraja Bhakti Vilasa, which records this map of Braj. His work gave Braj the 84 kos parikrama, and by Growse's account he was the first to set up its ban yatra, the pilgrimage through its forests. Source: Braj Ras, Growse, 1883
In 1883 the Mathura collector F. S. Growse wrote that "it was from him that every lake and grove in the circuit of Braj received a distinctive name", where the older Puranas mention only seven or eight such spots. Source: Growse, 1883
Around 1600 Nabhadas wrote in the Bhaktamal that every hidden holy place of the Mathura mandal named in the Varaha Purana, Narayan Bhatt Ji brought to light, and the whole world came to know them. Source: Shri Bhaktamal

Unchagaon and the Brajacharya Peeth
From about 1557

Raslila and the festivals
He had Braj's cowherd boys dress as Thakur ji and His friends to play the raslila, and set up the ras mandalis. Growse wrote in 1883 that he first established the ban yatra and the Ras-lila. Source: History Pandit, Hindi Wikipedia, Growse, 1883

His Brajotsava Chandrika is the book of Braj's festivals: which festival is kept where, and how.
